Tell me if this has ever happened to you: you bet an over on an NBA game because you really believe in one of the two offenses. Say, the Warriors pre-2019. You know they are putting up 120+ and the total is set at just 220. This feels like a slam dunk and you are counting your money as you place your bet. Only the other team doesn’t do their job and you lose the bet even though the thing you thought would happen, happens.
This has happened to me one too many time which is why I have started to bet NBA Team Totals more often. NBA Team Totals are an over/under number set on a specific team and are a fun bet to place.
In this article, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about NBA Team Totals. From how to bet them to where to bet them to my strategy, let’s get into it.
Where To Bet NBA Team Totals:
America: One of the best sites for NBA props is Bovada and they post NBA Team Totals on every game.
Canada: Look no further than Sports Interaction for NBA Team Totals and many other prop bets including the Race to 20 Points.
Everywhere Else: 888 offers a wide selection of props on every NBA game. Things like Alternative Spread, Double Result, and, of course, NBA Team Totals are all available here.
What are NBA Team Totals?
In this scenario, the NBA Team Totals would look like this:
Detroit Pistons: 108.5 (over/under)
Cleveland Cavaliers: 106 (over/under)
You would then bet on the over or the under just like any other total bet.
Common NBA Team Totals Questions:
What is the highest scoring NBA team of all-time?
Even with the amazing scoring explosion that we have seen over the past couple of seasons, no modern team can hold a candle to the 1982 Denver Nuggets. This team averaged an NBA record 126.5 per game and shot an amazing .520 from the field. They also shot .268 from three which makes this all the more impressive.
Denver also allowed 126 points per game if you were wondering why you don’t remember any championship banners being raised that season.
What is the best defense of all-time?
This is a pretty subjective thing as the league has changed so much over the years. There have been times when 85 points per game allowed was considered the norm and then there is today when teams have a great defense that allows 110+ points per game. It’s all subjective in a way.
However, one team really stuck out while doing my research: the 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons. This team played amazing defense all season, allowing just 84.3 points per game. Detroit had a run of five straight games during the season where they kept their opponents under 70 points.
They then went on to the playoffs where they set an NBA postseason record for blocks with 19 in game two of the Eastern Conference Finals.
How to Bet NBA Team Totals:
Bovada: Click “Basketball” up top and find the game you are looking for. Click the game and you will see all of the props. Find the “Period/Alternate Lines” section and look for “Total Points O/U” with a team name beside it. That’s your NBA Team Total for this one.
Sports Interaction: Click on “NBA Games” on the left side and then click the game you want. Scroll down to find “Team Total” which is just what it sounds like.
888: Search to get to the “NBA/Basketball” page. Click on the game you are interested and you will find a section titled “Handicap & Totals”. Here you will find an option called “Total Points by Home Team – Including Overtime” or “Total Points by Away Team – Including Overtime”. This will be the NBA Team Total for the game.
NBA Team Totals Betting Strategy:
My personal rule for betting NBA Team Totals is to only bet a team’s over when you think that they can win. If someone is a ten-point underdog, I stay away from their Team Total. The idea is that when it rains it pours for offenses in this league and when things are going well, the shots go in more. It’s just science.
However, I do also like to monitor injuries when betting this one. Teams can really lose a lot without a key player. The starting point guard is a big one as I’ve seen the very best offenses in the NBA crumble without their lead facilitator. There are a lot of factors that come into play when betting on a team total and injuries should be right there at the top of your list.
One of the other things that I focus on is recent schedule. The key thing to look for here is if a team is playing their third game in four nights and the second half of a back-to-back. This has been proven time and time again to be a rough game for that team and can often see them run out of steam late. Is that worth an under? Check the total and find out!
