The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, is one of golf’s four majors. It is considered the oldest tournament in golf as it has been taking place since 1860. The tournament takes place during the third week of July and consistents of a 72-hole stroke play tournament.
The tournament is played in a rotation of ten courses throughout the United Kingdom. Which are four in England, five in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland. The Open takes place on links courses which are the oldest style of golf course. Links courses refer to the type of land that the course is built on. The surface is more firm and uneven. The courses can also be windy due to their coastal location and lack of trees. These are trily challenging courses where the champion must fight the elements as well as his competitors.
A highlight of every summer, the Open is one of my favorite events to bet on. In this article I am going to share some of my strategy for winning bets at the Open Championship as well as where to bet it and how to bet it.
Where To Bet The Open Championship:
America: Bovada is probably the best bet for Americans looking to bet any Majors such as the British Open. They put up their lines early, have various props and are always a solid option for golf betting for Americans.
Canada: Bodog offer a ton of betting options on The Open Championship including match-ups, 3 ball and top 5 finishes. They offer a big variety of bets and player props as well which is great. They are very easy to use.
Everywhere Else: A place that I like to bet golfing majors is Bet365 Sportsbook. The reason is when it comes to majors, it can be tough to bet on who will win and so you want a variety of different betting options.
That is where Bet365 Sportsbook excel. They also are very good at offering major odds in advance so you can bet on the Open Championship months out.
What Open Championship Betting Is There?
There are quite a few betting options for The Open Championship. These are:
– Outright Winners
– E/W or Top 5 finish
– Match-ups
– 3 Ball
– Sixshooter
It depends on the sportsbook of course. You can also place bets on “Top American to Finish” etc where you only have to bet on which American will “win” out of all of the Americans playing.
Most sportsbooks – including the ones listed above – will also offer live betting which means you can bet during the tournament, or after each round if you wish. Sometimes it’s a good idea to wait for it to start so you can get an idea of who is running hot etc.

What is the best round in The Open history?
Henrik Stenson has the lowest final score over 72 holes and the lowest amount under par at the finish with his 2016 win with a 264 and -20 under par.
The lowest individual round was set in 2017 as Branden Grace scored a 62, which is a record for all majors.

How To Bet The Open Championship:
The PGA Majors are a big event for sportsbooks so they make it easy to find all the odds for the event. Just go to your sportsbook and find the “Golf” section. From there The Open Championship odds will be prominently displayed with a multitude of props available as well.
The Open Championship Betting Strategy:
Links courses require a different style of play than other courses and The Open is a bit different than the other PGA majors.
One would think that golfers from this area would perform better here, but this tournament has been won by Americans in four of ten years between 2008 and 2017. Other winners have been from Sweden, Northern Ireland, South Africa and Ireland so that seems to be out of the question as a strategy.
A stat I would look at when betting this event is fairways hit. The fairways on these courses are often very narrow and it is very punishing of those who miss the shots. Putting is also a major factor in this tournament since the greens can be huge on links courses.
